The UK Chip and PIN Programme began the first phase of a national roll-out in May 2003 with a three-month trial in Northampton. The key objective of the trial was to ensure education and communication among cardholders, retailers, banks, card issuers and building societies is as effective as possible.
The trial provided excellent results and the lessons learnt are being taken forward as the scheme is rolled out across the country. As well as fighting fraud, chip and PIN has proved to be an efficient, secure and customer-friendly system.
