Ensuring accessibility

Under the Disability Discrimination Act, businesses have three principal and reasonable duties of care: to provide a disabled person with a service that you provide to others; to provide the service on the same terms; to provide the service to the same standard.

This means that as part of your chip and PIN implementation plans, you should be considering a number of factors relating to the chip and PIN process at the point of sale and its accessibility for disabled customers.

Meeting the needs of the disabled population is of considerable commercial interest to businesses:

  • Over 8.3 million people in the UK are disabled
  • The "Disabled Pound" is estimated to be worth in excess of £50 billion, so developing an "inclusive" approach to disability can give you greater profitability in terms of income, corporate and social responsibility and public esteem. (source - RNIB)
