If there is one key lesson for retailers from the trial it is the need to take action early to implement chip and PIN. Allowing enough time for planning, testing, training and implementation is the key to success.
Implementation is straightforward for businesses with standalone bank owned terminals. They will be supplied with new equipment by their banks and will be given guidance on implementation.
For businesses who own their own integrated point-of-sale systems, time to complete each stage of the process varies depending on the complexity and size of the business, and the type of solution used. A smaller retailer adopting a standard solution may be able to implement chip and PIN in twelve to fourteen weeks. For larger organisations with tailored solutions, the process is likely to take at least thirty weeks.
